"Dr. Meadows has given educators an opportunity to learn the importance of recognizing every students' unique learning style by recounting her own difficulties of fitting into the regimentation of traditional classroom expectations. With memories of coping with reading challenges and dealing with the death of her mother, Dr. Meadows leads us through a life of learning how to meld her love of nature with her commitment to teaching by doing. This is a treatise on the benefits of experiential learning from elementary school and beyond." – Ann M. Brady, Ph.D., retired public school superintendent, Telluride, Colorado

Reflections Learning by Doing eBook BJ Meadows Marilyn Saltzman Reviews
Nobody learns the same way. So often schools are removing creative learning and replacing it with rote, standardized learning. Ms Meadows presents teachers, parents ways to incorporate learning by doing. Get out in nature, use nature as part of a learning process. This books helps to develop critical thinking in children and adults. Critical thinking is what makes us unique individuals and to question things one doesn't understand. This book is a must for developing well rounded children.
Thank you for sharing your fears, hesitations, criticisms, high expectations, and rewards in this story of life. Your examples of growing up as an active learner, and later as a concerned and dedicated teacher, truly touched the heart, something most books about education ignore. This certainly will be an inspirational story to new teachers desiring to let their creativity and enthusiasm shine despite the cloudy atmosphere that looms over many school environments today.
I love this book! It weaves wondrously written memoir and educational philosophy into a story driven by a splendid, complex character--B.J. Meadows. I rooted passionately throughout my reading for B.J. the child, the young woman, the new wife, the teacher, the educational reformist, the innovative administrator. My heart sang when she succeeded, it clutched when she struggled with criticism and disappointment. When she moved her incredibly innovative ideas into the real world through difficulty and resistance, I jumped for joy. I know B.J....we sit together in OLLI classes. She is even more stunning in person! I need two more of her books for my granddaughters. With my gift to them I will say, "this is what a life well-lived looks like".

If you want to be a good teacher or install good teaching policy, put away all those stupid educational theories and corporately-funded reasons for standardized testing and read this book! If you want to be a great teacher or give your educators the path toward being great teachers, this is the model. It is based on common sense, on the commitment to quality, and most importantly, on the tenets of giving each child an education that will actually provide value throughout his life. This is the stuff that if put into practice will transform students from autotrons back into functioning citizens.
